How serious the charge of theft is against a county employee arrested in May became more clear on Thursday, after the next step in the legal process was taken.
A Kaufman County grand jury handed down an indictment against Joan Hyett “P.J.” Gibson for theft equal to or more than $100,000 but less than $200,000, according to documents released by the Kaufman County District Clerk’s Office.
The indicment states that Gibson did “unlawfully appropriate, by acquiring or otherwise exercising control over property, to-wit: U.S. Currency, of the value of $100,000 or more but less than $200,000 … and with intent to deprive the owner of the property. And the defendant was then and there a public servant, namely, a tax office employee, and such property appropriated by the defendant had theretofore come into her custody, possession or control by virtue of her status as such a public servant.”
Gibson was arrested in May and her bond was set at $5,000. She posted bond and was released.
