Coming out in the public for the first time on the corruption charges levelled against him, chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said he would resign if the allegations of nepotism and favouritism were proved.

Launching a scathing attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot Friday challenged the opposition to prove corruption charges against him. He accused them of stirring up false allegations of corruption and said that he will not take a second to quit the office if proven guilty.Addressing a state convention of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) on its 40th foundation day here Friday, Gehlot castigated the opposition on various issues.

Denying reports about his government favouring the firms where his son Vaibhav works as a legal consultant, Gehlot said at the press conference, “If a particular company received contracts worth Rs 110 crore during my government, it had received contracts worth Rs 300 crore during the previous government through tenders.”

In a swift response to the chief minister’s statement, state BJP president Arun Chaturvedi issued a statement demanding probe into the allegations by an independent agency. “If the chief minister is really upright, he should get the charges against him investigated by the SIT or the CBI,” Chaturvedi told reporters.

Allegations were also levelled against Gehlot for allegedly benefitting his daughter and son-in-law, both residents of Mumbai.
