Each Full Moon carries a special power astrologically. But when the Full Moon is related to sheer Grace and Good Luck, as it is on July 3rd, we cannot help but speak of God. The realization that God is within you can be awakened and activated for the rest of your life on Guru Purnima. To "Be still and know that you are God" brings the power of peace and makes every aspect of your life effortless and sweet.
'Guru' in India, holds a supreme significance. Guru is a person with revered personality, who by his teachings enlightens us. He introduces us to the vast world of knowledge and shuns our ignorance. He teaches us, he guides us, he protects us from all sorts of dangers and sins. Perhaps, that's the reason why Kabir in one of his songs says, that if God and Guru stand side by side, the first adoration and worship should be offered to Guru and then to God. This is because through Guru we can recognise and realize the significance of God.
Guru Purnima is a day when we pay obeisance to the lifeline of the civilization of India - the guru-sisya-parampara or mentor-protege lineage. Vedanta Trust organises Guru Purnima functions which are a blend of devotion and knowledge at two locations in Mumbai and one in New Delhi annually. The functions have an inspiring lecture by Jaya Row preceded by soulful bhajans, devotional songs, that set the right tone for spiritual enrichment.
The teacher-student relationship is accorded paramount importance in Indian culture. The guru occupies the same pedestal given to God. Spiritual growth is impossible without the help of a guru who is Brahmavit and Brahmajna – established in the state of God Realisation and has the skills to impart the subtle spiritual concepts. Rare is the person who meets with these stringent qualifications. Yet India has been blessed with outstanding sages who have appeared in every generation to keep this unique tradition alive. It is to this singular endowment that we pay our respects. And as a mark of gratitude we offer ourselves as guru daksina and pledge to continue the tradition for generations to come.
Guru Purnima is also referred to as Vyasa Purnima. Vyasa codified the Vedas. The seat from which any spiritual or Vedic teaching is imparted is referred to as Vyasapeetha in acknowledgement of Vyasa’s stellar contribution to Vedanta. All teachers bow to Vyasa before taking the seat. He is revered as the first guru although the guru-sisya parampara started long before his time.
The work guru is derived from two words, 'Gu' and 'Ru' . The Sanskrit root "Gu" means darkness or ignorance. "Ru" denotes the remover of that darkness. Therefore one who removes darkness of our ignorance is a Guru. So Guru is most necessary part of lives.On this day, disciples offer puja (worship) or pay respect to their Guru (Spiritual Guide). It falls on the day of full moon, Purnima, in the month of Ashadh (June–July) of the Shaka Samvat, Indian national calendar and Hindu calendar.
