HARIDWAR (Uttarakhand): At least 16 people were killed in a horrific stampede at a religious event here Tuesday when tens of thousands had packed the banks of the Ganges, organisers said.

Witnesses said the tragedy occurred when an elderly woman slipped while walking through a barricaded route close to where 1,551 'yagnas' - or fire rituals - were on.

At least 16 people, mostly women, were killed and several others injured in a stampede during a religious ceremony attended by tens of thousands of devotees near Har Ki Pauri here today.
SDM Haridwar Harbir Singh said 16 people were killed in the stampede.
He said the exact cause of stampede will only come out after an inquiry.

As the stampede broke out, the people ran helter-skelter with women and children falling on the ground.Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal was also holding 'yajna' at the ashram when the stampede broke out.

About 50,000 people were participating in the “yagya” and the stampede seems to have been triggered by suffocation due to excessive smoke from over 1,000 havan kunds, Hariram, a participant from Gujarat, said.
